El Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead

The Indianapolis Art Center invites families to celebrate the festival of Day of the Dead. This year's celebration will be on Sunday, November 1, 2009, noon-5 p.m. with activities taking place throughout the months of October and November (check back for a downloadable program).

The Indianapolis Art Center's Outreach Department began providing Day of the Dead programming in 2000 as a response to the growing Hispanic and Latino populations in Indianapolis. Through the years the Art Center has found Day of the Dead programming to expand and bridge all communities because of a common experience shared among all people: death.

2008 Day of the Dead is sponsored by:

  • Major funding of this program provided by the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Foundation.

  • This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art, with additional contributions from the Indiana Arts Commission, General Mills Foundation, and Land O’Lakes Foundation.

Communicating the historical importance of this celebration through art activities engages children and adults in discussion regarding their own beliefs and connected people from all walks of life.
